It’s never too early to start training your puppy. Here are 10 cues or commands to add to the repertoire.
Drop It
This command can be a cue for fetch or tug-of-war, and it teaches dogs to give you things instead of guarding them.
Come
Your dog should be able to come when called. This is important for their safety.
Off
Teach your dog not to jump onto surfaces or onto you with the command “off”, so they don’t bowl people over!
Watch Me
This common obedience command teaches a dog to focus on you, shifting their concentration away from whatever you want to distract them from.
Leave It
This is an essential command to prevent a puppy from curiously chewing on, eating, or playing with dangerous things.
Sit
This common command is good for teaching manners and helping your dog sit patiently and calmly.
Emergency Come
For some dogs, the “come” command is one that can be obeyed at leisure. You need to make sure your puppy knows to come to you at a run when you say the emergency come command.
Heel
Teach your puppy to walk well on a leash with this command, staying by your side instead of pulling you along.
Their Name
Any puppy or dog should know their name and respond to it with eye contact.
Stay
This command is crucial for safety so your dog doesn’t run off, get themselves into trouble, greet newcomers too hastily, or knock you over.
