Taking care of newborn puppies can be very difficult. Here are 12 tips for doing so.
- Use A Whelping Box. This box will ensure the puppies’ warmth and safety. They should stay in here for their first two weeks of life.
- Line The Box. Use newspapers or towels to keep the babies warm.
- Make Sure There’s Space. The box should be big enough for the puppies to wiggle around.
- Use A Heated Mat. Bury the mat under all those towels or newspapers for safe extra heat.
- Cover Some Of It. The puppies and their mom will feel safer in a den-like box. Cover a portion of it with a towel or blanket.
- Let Them Sleep. Newborn puppies spend most of their time snoozing.
- Keep It Quiet. Put the box somewhere peaceful, with accessible water for the mom.
- Monitor Them. Check on the puppies every other day to make sure they’re in good health.
- No Visitors Yet. Mother dogs may be aggressive towards any perceived threat to her babies when they are newborns.
- Know About Weaning. It takes eight weeks for dogs to be weaned, and until then, they should not be separated from their mother.
- Use Crates. Let the puppies, once they’re a bit bigger, consider their crates to be their “rooms”. This will teach them about boundary respect and reduce separation anxiety risk.
- Potty Train. Potty train with patience and on a fixed schedule.
