3 Reasons Why You Should Consider Not Shaving Your Double-Coated Dog

If you have a double-coated dog – one with an undercoat that regularly sheds and a top coat that stops growing at a certain length – then you have probably realized that shedding can be a real issue.

You’ve probably had to take them to the groomer’s many times, and you’ve maybe even considered shaving them. But this isn’t something that is a good idea in double-coated pups! Here’s why.

1. It’s damaging

Shaving a pup who has a coat like this will result in the eventual deterioration of the quality of new fur, sometimes to the point of fur never growing back properly. New fur may be patchy or simply not grow, resulting in bald spots and fur that is string and lacks luster.

2. It won’t stop shedding

All shaving does is make the hairs shed shorter – it doesn’t stop the shedding altogether. It’s far more difficult to clean up short hairs, which can then become splinters and stick to everything. Yikes!

3. It’s unhealthy

A coat is needed to regulate heat so they stay cool because pups don’t sweat. By shaving, the sun will get to them more easily, which can cause severe overheating. It can also result in sunburn.

So before making any drastic decisions regarding your pup’s lovely coat of fur, be sure to talk to your groomer!
