Pup Mommies and Daddies need to make sure that they know their pups very well. This can help to keep them healthy, especially when it comes to breed specific disorders.
This refers to illnesses or health issues that are likely to crop up for a specific breed of dog. If you have a dachshund pup, then here are three to look out for.
1. Atopic Dermatitis
Known simply as allergic skin disease, this is an allergy caused by something inhaled – like pollen or dust. The effects show up on the skin and cause itching, hair loss, and odors. A pup with this condition may also lick their paws and bite at their nails.
2. Degenerative Disc Disease
This condition is common in dachshunds due to their long backs. It’s what happens when the vertebrae, which function as protectors and a house to the spinal cord, become diseased and cannot absorb the stress and impact of movement very well. In some cases, the vertebrae discs may rupture and damage the spinal cord, resulting in paralysis.
3. Periodontal Disease
This is a disease of the mouth, of which the symptoms are foul breath and teeth that have become infected. These teeth will loosen, causing pain as the jaw bone erodes, and then eventually fall out. Regular dental cleaning can help prevent this!
Be sure to talk to your veterinarian about the risks of these diseases, and what preventative steps to avoid them. With proper care, your doxie pup can live their life free of these conditions. Do like and share this information if you found it helpful!
