Summer is here! It’s a wonderful time for fun loving pups who want to play in the warmth of the sun with the grass between their paws. But this blazing heat comes with some downsides and drawbacks, too.
Pup Mommies and Daddies need to be aware of the troubles that the basking summer sun can bring to a pup, especially short-nose breeds. It’s important that you keep them safe during this season! Here are some things to keep in mind.
1. Attention
Do not leave your pup unattended at home for prolonged periods of time, and definitely not for longer than eight hours. Door flaps that lead outside should also be closed, as many may become stuck due to the high temperatures. And of course, never leave your pup alone in a car during this heat – temperatures within can soar to the hundreds in minutes.
2. Keep cool
If your pup is hanging out in the yard, make sure there is a shaded area that they can retreat to, and keep fresh water out to avoid dehydration. Remember, fans don’t really work the same way for pups as they do not sweat the way humans do, so shade and cooling spaces are the best bet. Some items, like jackets and mats designed to keep pups cool, can also be of use this season.
3. Exercise
If your pup has a long coat, don’t walk them until that coat has been properly trimmed by a groomer. When you are able to walk your pup, try to limit play and exercise times to mornings and evenings and keep away from the afternoon sun. You should also be wary of surfaces that can burn your pup’s paw pads. Test surfaces with your palm. If you can’t keep your hand there for more than 15 seconds without pain, it’s too hot for your pup.
