It’s funny to watch a dog drag their butt across the floor. They look very silly doing it – but it could be a sign of a serious problem. Here are the possible reasons your dog is dragging their butt around.
Anal Gland Problems
This is a very common cause of dragging behavior. In dogs, the glands around the anus, known as anal sacs, can become full over time, leading to irritation and discomfort. This is known as an impacted anal gland. It may lead to foul-smelling secretions. Speak to your vet about how to empty the glands.
Tapeworms
These parasites make their way into dogs via ingestion of contaminated matter. Tapeworms grow within the intestines and shed their segments, which exit your dog’s body through their anus. This can cause irritation. If you see that your dog’s butt has tiny rice-like bits of white or gold, it’s probably tapeworms causing the issue.
Excess Waste
Dogs don’t exactly have the ability to wipe after using the bathroom, so sometimes, bits of their poop can get stuck around the fur of your dog’s behind. Your dog may scoot to try and get rid of them. There’s even a medical term for this: Canine Pseudocoprostasis.
Allergies
Irritation-caused scooting can be a result of allergies. Fleas, dust, pollen, food, smoke, medication, and environmental factors can all cause allergies. Talk to a vet to narrow down the root cause.
