Senior dogs are often considered unadoptable, as most people want to adopt younger dogs from shelters. But this shouldn’t be the case, especially since senior dogs deserve just as much love and have so much to offer! Here are 5 reasons why adopting a senior dog is best.
1. They’ve Learned Their Lessons
Most older dogs would have already been through some level of training. They probably know a few basic commands, are likely house trained, and may also be more well-behaved as a result. Plus, they are still eager to learn new tricks and commands if needed!
2. They’re Often More Calm
Senior dogs don’t have the boisterous energy of puppies. This makes them calm, relaxing companions. They don’t need to burn off a ton of energy in order to be well-behaved; they can just lie next to you happily without the need for excessive playtime.
3. They’re Independent
Yes, of course senior dogs can be clingy! But they know the drill. They know how life works. They’re not tiny little puppies still struggling to figure out which things don’t end so well for them and which things are fine.
4. They Have So Much Love To Give
A dog who has been stuck at a shelter for a long time – especially if they came in as a senior and long for a life they remember – are often very grateful to those who adopt them. They’ll lavish you with all the love and affection they can muster!
5. You’ll Save A Life
Senior dogs are at the highest risk for euthanasia at kill shelters that are running out of space. Plus, the stressful shelter life can be severely detrimental to the health of a golden age dog. If you adopt one, you might just be saving their life.
