We now dogs have sharp noses, but vets do too! In fact, they may be able to pinpoint medical conditions just by giving your dog a sniff.
Here are 5 issues a vet can spot by using their nose:
Ear Infections
Bacteria overgrowth in a dog’s ears lead to infection. Their ears are, after all, the perfect, easy spot for bacterial and yeast breeding. Normal, healthy dog ears don’t smell, so any odd odor warrants a vet visit.
Anal Glands
No one thinks a dog’s butt should smell like flowers, but a very strong stink is a sign of an anal gland issue. Excess itchiness in the area is another accompanying symptom.
Skin Infections
Infections of a bacterial or fungal variety on a dog’s skin have a distinct scent. They often small kind of like cheese-flavored popcorn – cheesy, but sweet. Sounds gross, but it works!
Abscesses
An abscess occurs when too much puss gathers in the skin, and a ruptured one can be easy for a vet to sniff out.
Dental Disease
You can’t expect fresh breath from a dog, but the stench that comes with dental disease is usually unmistakable to a professional. Accompanied by discoloration, redness, or swelling, dental disease must be treated ASAP.
