Does your pup rarely ever get sent to a groomer, or do you almost never groom them on your own?
You may not realize it, but infrequent grooming can actually be bad for a pup’s health, and having a regular grooming schedule can help make them happier and healthier. Here’s how!
1. Nails
Nails that are too overgrown risk being torn off or curling into food pads, which can cause a lot of bleeding and pain. In addition, nails that are perpetually too long change the way your pup walks, which can cause injury and even lead to arthritis and other issues. Get started with these nail-cutting tips here!
2. Ears
Ear infections are the leading cause of vet visits in the US, and they can happen just because you neglect to clean your pup’s ears regularly or after swimming or baths. Learn about what causes them here, and check out these links here and here to find out how to prevent them!
3. Eyes
If eye gunk isn’t cleaned out, it can cause sores and even infection. Wiping your pup’s eyes with wet, warm cloth as often as needed can really help prevent them from turning into worse. Don’t neglect eyes during a bath, and if you can’t clean them yourself, get a groomer to do so during scheduled sessions.
4. Teeth
Brushing a pup’s teeth daily sounds like a pain, but it can help prevent infections, abscesses, and decay. Learn how to do so here! If you don’t have time to do it daily, doing so weekly can really help prevent abscesses and infection. If you can’t perform regular brushing on your own, then a groomer should do so during your scheduled sessions.
5. Fur and hair
Without regular brushing, pups’ fur can become tangled and form into mats that result in a lot of pain and skin problems. As such, fur needs to be brushed often depending on your pup’s coat – find out more here! If you cannot brush your pup’s hair often, then send them to a groomer to have their fur trimmed short.
6. Parasites
When you bathe your pup, it becomes much easier to spot fleas, lice, or ticks on their bodies. Otherwise, they’re easy to mistake for dirt or could get lost in all the fur. Learn how to prevent parasites here and find out more about the potential health risks of parasites here. 7. Lumps
During the grooming process, you will be able to spot lumps or bumps under a pup’s fur that could be a sign of a greater health problem.
