It’s so amazingly rewarding to rescue a dog, but it’s not always smooth sailing. Dogs can be anxious, stressed out, frightened, or carrying emotional baggage when they come into your home. So how can you help ease the process and make them feel safe?
Here are some ways to earn a rescue dog’s trust:
1. Take Introductions Slowly
Yes, we know everyone wants to meet them – but don’t overwhelm your dog with all your friends and family at once. Do one person at a time over the course of several weeks.
2. Using A Calm Voice
Speak to your new dog in a soothing and gentle tone from the very beginning to make them feel safe.
3. Remember, The World Is New
Everyday items, sights, sounds, and smells are normal for you, but they could be overwhelmingly brand new to a dog.
4. Have High Value Treats
Get some treats a dog just can’t refuse and offer it to them or leave it near to you so you can build trust with them. Don’t force it, though!
5. Think About Medication
Some dogs will need anti-anxiety medication at first in order to safely adjust to their new life.
6. Pinpoint Motivation
What is it that makes this dog tick? What are they motivated by? Toys? Cuddles? Treats? Whatever it is, use it to build your bond with them and encourage them!
7. Ask For Assistance
If your dog is really struggling to get used to her home, speak to your vet or a trainer about options.
