K9s For Warriors is a non-profit organization that, since 9/11, has given veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury or with post-traumatic stress disorder a highly trained shelter dog as a companion.
Ninety-five percent of the dogs used in the program are from shelters! Warriors have to apply to the program. Once they are accepted, the are enrolled in a three-week training course, where they meet their dog and get special training. K9s For Warriors is the only program that offers on-site housing and training for veterans and their new dogs.
The entire program is free of charge to the veterans and includes, housing, food, veterinary care, peer support, access to certified dog trainers. Corporate sponsors fund all of K9S For Warriors operating costs. Donations from individuals go directly to the programs they offer. Bayer started supporting K9S For Warriors in 2014. Recently Bayer announced the launch of Operation K9 Care.
This free program will help K9s For Warriors graduates get in touch with veterinary practices and pet retailers that will offer free health and wellness goods and services to their service dogs! The veterinary services provided include vaccinations, comprehensive physicals, fecal exams, diagnostic testing, and K9 Advantix II for flea and tick protection!
Pet retailers involved in the program will give each Warrior and his dog a $1,000 gift card annually for the life of the dog to help with grooming, food, leashes and other supplies! This is an amazing program for both the veterans and dogs alike. Taking a dog out of a shelter to be a constant companion to a veteran is rather genius!
