Before Buying Your Dog's Shampoo Make Sure These Ingredients Aren't In It

In order to keep your dog clean, you need to bathe them regularly. Usually, you’d use some kind of dog shampoo to help cleanse their fur. But not all dog shampoos are created equal, and some contain questionable ingredients that could be bad for your pooch.

Here are 9 ingredients to avoid:

Fragrances

Perfumes and scents can harm your dog’s liver, and your dog doesn’t need to smell like flowers to be clean!

Solvents

Most dog products contain propylene glycol, but it could cause kidney and liver problems. It’s the leading ingredient found in anti-freeze. Yikes!

Surfactants

These compounds can cause fur and skin damage, leading to potential carcinogen infiltration.

Colorants

Artificial coloring agents can actually be carcinogenic, depending on the type, and they may even contain neurotoxins. Carmine especially should be avoided, but FD&C dyes and Lake Dyes are no good, either.

Bug Repellents

Yes, it sounds good on paper, but DEET as an additive to shampoos can lead to degenerative disorders. Use separate preventative care products against bugs.

Moisturizers

These products actually coat the skin in a way that blocks pores unhealthily. This can be irritating and even lead to early aging.

Emulsifiers

While good for creating bubbles, these components – especially in DEA – can lead to hormone problems.

Preservatives

Many preservatives found in dog shampoos are believed to lead to weaker immune systems, increased irritation, and tumors.

Antibacterial Properties

Triclosan is a common antibacterial ingredient, but it can lead to hormonal problems.
