Cannabidiol’s Health Benefits To Dogs & Its Safety Concerns

Cannabidiol or CBD Oil is a non-toxic, liquid, cannabis derivative which, based on anecdotal evidence, is believed to relieve pain, inflammation, and anxiety in dogs.

It’s also said to treat other health conditions, including osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, and other joint issues that cause pain and discomfort among older dogs, while also treating epilepsy among common pets. There are currently tons of CBD oil pet products flooding the market, and contrary to what some people fear, these aren’t going to give your pet a ‘high.’

Although non-psychoactive, these products need to be administered at the indicated proper dosage. Otherwise, it could lead to drowsiness, frequent thirst, or an upset stomach. One vet recommends an initial dosage of 0.2 milligrams for every kilogram weight, administered twice a day, going up similarly to 0.5 milligrams.

You can also give two to three milligrams of CBD oil twice daily if your dog experiences intense pain, seizures, or inflammation. How cannabidiol eases anxiety in canines isn’t completely understood but it’s believed to interact with the endocannabinoid system. Not one dog is the same. One canine may respond well to cannabidiol while another may not.

In easing anxiety, CBD oil works itself on your canine’s system within 30-60 minutes. This cannabis derivative can also take several weeks before you’ll notice results in recurring pain and inflammation among dogs. If you’re thinking of introducing cannabidiol, it’s best to read up and discuss with your vet to be safe.
