Do you groom all your pups the same way? You could be making a mistake! There are seven kinds of coats that a pup can have, and each kind must be groomed and cared for differently. Here’s a list of each one!
1. Smooth
This refers to pups with fur that is very short fur. They should be bathed once every one to three months, and if you have issues with shedding, you can use a rubber curry brush. However, don’t overdo it – other de-shedding methods are best left to groomers.
2. Double
Pups with double coats have a lower layer of undercoat that sheds at certain periods of the year and a top layer of rough hairs for protection. To prevent matting and tangling and control shedding, use a slicker brush and an undercoat rake to brush regularly. This helps to keep your pup cool. Don’t shave your pup if they have an undercoat!
3. Curly
This kind of fur needs regular trimming as it doesn’t stop growing! You should use a slicker brush or metal comb to regularly brush out tangles. Full-on grooming should be performed every four to six weeks.
4. Wire
Wiry coats can be either short or long and need a slicker brush or metal comb for brushing when it is needed. Sometimes, if the coat is starting to stick out, you may need to hand strip the fur. Talk to a groomer about this before attempting it!
5. Drop
Also known simply as “long fur”, this kind of fair doesn’t stop growing and is typically straight or wavy. A pin or slicker brush and a metal comb should be used for frequent brushing, and haircuts should be given every four to six weeks.
6. Corded
Hair that grows in a long, corded form will not require brushing if their cords are not separated. However, all pups with this coat require that those cords are separated every now and then. It is also difficult to wash these pups as the cords can take a while to dry and may smell if they do not do so properly. As such, you may decide to shave your pup instead.
7. Hairless
Hairless breeds might have no fur at all or some in certain places. You will need to apply sunscreen to these pups before they go out under the sun as they are prone to burns.
