If you have a well-behaved dog, it’s very tempting to take them outside without a leash. But is that really something you should do? To put it bluntly, no.
Here are 7 reasons you should always keep your dog on a leash when you’re out and about:
1. Fear
Loud noises, bright lights, and other phobias can present themselves in public. Even at home, these things can be terrifying to a dog, and in public, fight or flight can kick in quickly.
2. Kids
Children aren’t the best at picking up on the discomfort or boundaries of a dog. It just takes a little too much pressure for a dog to decide aggression is their best option, and this will cause huge problems for you.
3. Legality
Many laws require that you keep your dog on a leash!
4. Chases
Sometimes, a dog sees something they want to chase, and in certain breeds, their instincts will kick in and they won’t be able to control themselves.
5. Humans
Some dogs react negatively to people, and they may lash out at humans who come too close, remind them of people they dislike, or just rub them the wrong way.
6. Food
Many dogs can’t resist food that they see on the ground. The food may be toxic, spoiled, or even baited with poison.
7. Fights
Some dogs don’t react well to other dogs and may get into fights.
