The National Fire Protection Association states that over 500,000 pets are caught in home fires annually, with almost 1,000 being unintentionally caused by one of those pets!
So how can you ensure that your pup doesn’t end up accidentally starting one such fire? Here are some tips:
1. Look through the house and find potential fire hazards, and keep them away from anywhere your pup can reach. This will differ depending on where your pup is allowed to go or can go. For example, if your pup often gets onto the kitchen counter, cover the stove’s knobs.
2. Do not leave your dogs unattended near any lit fires, be it a fireplace in the hearth or a burning candle.
3. Loose wires should be fixed, especially if they are near paper or other easily flammable materials and objects.
4. Come up with a plan to follow in case of a fire. Run a fire drill a couple of times with your family and pets.
5. Consider installing smoke alarms in your home.
In the event of a fire, how do you save your pups? Here are some ways to be prepared for an emergency like this one:
1. Pups who are left home alone can be kept near entrances or in front rooms.
2. Ensure that your pups are always wearing a collar with an ID tag that has your up-to-date contact information.
3. Prepare a doggy emergency kit that has some food, their medication, medical records, and new, clear photographs for identification purposes.
Keep your pup’s, and your family, safe! Do like and share away!
