Have You Ever Wondered How Often You Should Groom Your Pup?

Proper grooming is important for keeping a pup healthy and clean. But how often do you need to do you take your pup to a groomer?

This depends on a lot of factors, but the type of breed of your pup and their coats can help you figure that out. Here’s a general guide!

1. Short-haired dogs

Pups with short hair need little brushing and don’t need baths often. If your pup seems to shed a lot, a groomer can help reduce that problem.

2. Short-haired dogs with double coats

Pups with double coats shed seasonally, so you’d have to make sure full grooming occurs four times a year. This is to get rid of the dead fur on the undercoat before it all drops out!

3. Long-haired dogs with double coats

Apart from needing seasonal grooming, these pups also tend to have feathery furs on parts of their bodies like the ears, feet, and butt that you can opt to trim. There is a higher risk for mats in long-haired pups, but don’t try to cut them out yourself – get a groomer to do it!

4. Thick-undercoated dogs

If your pup has a very thick undercoat, it has to be removed entirely seasonally – at least every three months – to avoid severe matting. You do not want to have to resort to shaving to get rid of these mats, as it can result in sunburn for pups with this coat!

5. Silky-coated dogs

This refers to pups with one coat that will continually grow if it is not trimmed. If your pup gets cuts that leave more than an inch of fur, he will need to be groomed every four to six weeks. If he has a very short cut, he can go two to three months without grooming.

6. Curly- and wavy-coated dogs

These pups tend to mat the easiest. If their hair is longer than half an inch, brush them twice a week; if it’s longer than an inch, you have to brush daily. Grooming should be done every four to six weeks.

7. Terriers

These are in a separate category due to their wiry coats that rarely mat. You only need to groom them every two to three months.

There are, of course some general rules to follow. Nails should be trimmed at least once a month, and if your pup’s fur starts tangling easily or begins to shed profusely, it means it’s time for full-on grooming. Do share this information with other pup parents!
