Hot months are a trying time for dogs! Unlike humans, they cannot sweat, and can only release heat by panting or through their paw pads. As such, too much heat can cause a heat stroke.
If you live in a desert area, then temperatures might be even hotter for you! In order to care for your pups, you have to ensure that they are kept safe and healthy during these scorching months until it starts to cool off in mid-October. Here are some things you can do:
1. Ensure your pup has access to clean, fresh water. Consider leaving out two or three bowls if you’ll be out for a while.
2. Keep your home cool and well-ventilated and let your pup stay indoors during the hottest times of the day. You can set up a fan just for them to hang out in front of. Having the air conditioning on in the room that they are in will help, too!
3. Make sure that, when outside, your pup always has access to shade.
4. Keep your pups well-groomed and have their fur groomed to take off some of their insulation. Just make sure not to shave too much, as that can lead to sunburn!
5. Walk your pup and take them for exercise in the early mornings and late evenings, staying away from hotter hours.
6. Be aware of symptoms of heatstroke, which include heavy breathing and rapid panting, a red tongue, and sticky saliva at a thicker consistency. Pups with short noses, such as bulldogs, are more susceptible to heat stroke.
Summer is fun, but keeping your pups cool is important, too! Do like and share away!
