Cognitive dysfunction can affect many aging dogs. Here’s what you need to know.
Signs
Symptoms of canine cognitive dysfunction include:
- Stimuli Reaction. Something that used to make a dog excited, like bringing out the leash, or something that once frightened them, like thunderstorms, they may become totally indifferent to.
- Sleep-Wake Cycles. They may sleep more during the day and become active at night.
- Social Interaction. They may become more aggressive, fearful, or bored around those they once loved.
- Learning Issues. They may forget their training and be unable to learn anything new.
- Confusion. They may seem disoriented, even in familiar places.
- Activity. They may begin performing unusual behaviors, like pacing, barking, or repetitive actions.
How To Help
It can be heartbreaking seeing a dog suffering from cognitive dysfunction. Here’s what you can do to help:
- Routine. Keep your everyday routine predictable and regular to help reduce your dog’s anxiety.
- Exercise. Help keep your dogs active. Encourage them with toys, treats, or even simple games that get them on their feet.
- Train. Continue to train your dog and challenge them mentally. They’ll receive a confidence boost from the praise!
- Toys. Give your dog new toys every so often to help enrich their environment.
- Comfort. Make sure your home is comfortable for your dog. Help them navigate the home and make sure they can get wherever they need to go.
