Nate Ohlman was going along his usual mail delivery route in Missouri on the 25th of February when he saw something that shocked him. It was a senior pup, lying in a ditch, in the absolutely freezing weather.
Ohlman knew he had to help. He approached as slowly as he could, trying not to startle the pup – but in vain. The pup didn’t have great eyesight or vision, and once he saw Ohlman close enough to him, he got up and ran. But he didn’t run away. He got into Ohlman’s mail truck.
Ohlman quickly took the pup, later named Sloan, to a nearby animal hospital. He gave the clinic his phone number and wanted to be updated on what happened next. He then went back to work, but he just couldn’t stop thinking about the poor pup and how someone could be so cruel to him.

Sloan was transferred to the KC Pet Project shelter the following day, and staff were horrified and heartbroken to see how he looked. He was covered in sores, was far too skinny, and couldn’t even walk or stand for extended periods. He was given fluids and medication, and staff fussed over him, fearing that it was too late to save him.

Sloan, estimated to be about 12 years of age, thankfully began to recover. When he was well enough, he went to a foster home and continued to heal, revealing a goofy and loving personality. He just loved people and thrived in all the affection and attention!

Eventually, it was time for Sloan to be adopted. KC Pet Project staff decided to reach out to Ohlman about the good news, and he was absolutely thrilled to know that he could adopt the pup officially! When the two met again, their reunion was full of hugs and kisses on both sides, but especially from a very grateful Sloan, who recognized him immediately.

Sloan now lives with Ohlman and is having the time of his life. He’s finally in a loving home, where no one will ever hurt him again.
