Learn How To Keep Your Pups Safe From Ticks This Summer

Summer is bug season, so it’s just about that time of the year where pup parents need to start worrying about ticks. Some experts have even suggested that this season may bring more than usual!

Ticks typically attach themselves onto animals – and some people – by crawling up the ends of tall grass. Ticks that successfully latch onto pups will bite down and burrow itself into the skin.

The main concern with ticks is the potential spread Lyme Disease and also of the deadly virus Powassan, which are both carried by these pests. Powassan can result in inflammation in the brain and even meningitis. Learn more about other health risks here.

Do note that not all ticks are carriers for these conditions, so you don’t have to immediately panic if you spot one on your pup or yourself. Find out what to do if you see a tick and how to identify it here. In the meantime, though, make sure to stay out of areas with tall grass, and use insect repellant on yourself if needed, and always check for ticks after outdoor activities. Here’s how to properly check your pup for ticks:

1. Start from the head all the way to the tail, parting fur to look thoroughly as you go.

2. Make sure to spend some time checking ears, as ticks can hide deep in there!

3. Take off your pup’s collar when you’re looking for ticks as they can hide beneath it or latch onto the collars themselves.

4. If you find a tick, remove them following these guidelines!

If you find a tick on your pup and think it may be dangerous, be sure to see a vet immediately, and take pictures of the tick or bring it along in a clear container to show to the vet. Do like and share this information if you found it helpful!
