Dogs love digging things up! They sniff around, spot patches of land that make them curious, and within seconds, you’re running out into the garden and telling your pup to stop ruining your garden. Whoops!
But this trait comes from a history of pups being bred to sniff out and locate different objects. Paleontologists Jamie Jordan and Sarah Moore were well aware of this when they added Crystal the beagle pup to their family. They carefully trained Crystal to be able to sniff out fossils and bones, and so far, she’s had plenty of success while accompanying her Mommy and Daddy out on expeditions, and she’s found sponges, anomites – which are a variety of molluscs that live underwater – and even ancient teeth from sharks!
As a reward, she gets to play with some of these fossils, and apparently, they’re like catnip to her. Her skill set increases every day, and she’s just three years old – so she’s going to be learning to uncover a lot more in the near future!
