Pet stores in the city Sandy Springs, located in GA have made a decision that has animal advocates jumping for joy!
The stores are taking a stand and are no longer allowed to sell any dog or cat that comes from breeding facilities (aka puppy or kitten mills)! The new city law is on its way to being a reality. The new plan is to have stores promote rescuing animals. Councilmember Gabriel Sterling said the city was going to take the money out of the breeder’s hands.
To shut the mills down means saving dogs and cats a lifetime of misery. Puppy and kitten mills are known for depriving animals of safe, clean living conditions. They have no access to food, clean water, or veterinary care. City attorney Dan Lee and Assistant City Clerk Kelly Bognar both indicated the new ordinance promotes the humane treatment of animals and can even save the city money from having to deal with animals that get abandoned.
The new ordinance will prevent stores from the commercial trading of cats and dogs. It will only allow the locations to host rescues from nonprofit or government shelters. There is a $500 fine for every violation. Sounds like a good incentive to follow the law! Finally, the welfare of animals is taking priority of the profit margin of people! Hip Hip Hooray! Let us hope that more cities and states get on board with this idea. Puppy and kitten mills have got to go!
