Scooter the Chihuahua pup was absolutely devastated when his parent sadly passed away. The poor senior dog suddenly found himself ripped away from the familiar world he knew, instead forced to live in the confusing shelter environment of the Branch County Humane Society of Michigan.
To try and stay strong in the frightening time, Scooter took comfort in a special dark blue blanket, peppered with a white star pattern to cuddle in. He would tuck himself into the little blanket, doing his best to feel comforted within it. All that could be seen of the pup’s form would be his nervously pointed ears and the clearly anxious expression on his face.
At the age of 12, Scooter’s likelihood of being adopted was very small, especially given an old hip injury that needed regular care. Shelter staff weren’t too sure if he would ever be able to find a forever home again. In a call for help, the shelter posted a picture of Scooter bundled up in his favorite blanket online, and that’s when Jessica Lynn Howard happened to see the Facebook post.
Howard had, in the past, adopted two other Chihuahuas from the exact same shelter. As soon as she saw Scooter’s picture, she turned to her husband Tim and said that she knew she had to go and get him. She was moved to tears by the poor pup’s obvious fear and sadness. It was a three-hour drive, but the next morning, Howard drove directly to the shelter and picked the pup up.
Scooter fit right in at his brand new home. He met a big pack of his new pup siblings, including Jack and Babyface the Chihuahuas, Hank the Chihuahua and heeler mix, and Waylon and Spur the heelers. He then got to explore the huge farm that he would now call his home.
The pup is now doing so much better! He shows his goofy and adorable personality, and he’s obviously very young at heart. Still, even though he’s out of that shelter environment, he continues to tuck himself in with his favorite blanket whenever he wants a snooze.
The difference is that this time, he’s just doing it because he likes to!
