Here’s the thing – pups don’t have a lot of short-term working memory. This means correction doesn’t really work unless you can catch them in the act of doing something unwanted, because they can’t connect your punishment to their crime.
When they act guilty, they’re really just responding to your body language!
You can see this happening in this video. This Golden Retriever pup named Cash has wrecked his Mom’s room, and it is a complete mess! The books are torn, the trash is upturned – you could say a mini-tornado ran through the room and it would fit the scene set before Mom’s eyes.
Mom, understandably, is in disbelief at this scene. Cash doesn’t see the problem at first, but you can see his tail wagging slowly stop when he realizes Mom’s pretty serious about this. Hopefully Mom will remember to keep her pup entertained and exercised in the future – bored pups are destructive pups, after all!
