It is not uncommon to see dogs barking at the mail or delivery people. Typically, the behavior is encouraged because whenever dogs bark at these people, they leave, making the dog feel like they’ve done well and reinforcing the behavior.
However, the relationship between dogs and the delivery people need not be aggressive. There have been cases where it can turn into a beautiful relationship if dog parents train their dogs to be friendly with strangers.
Joshua Byrne was observing his golden retriever, Shelby, and noticed his behavior changed slightly when the garbage truck arrived. Byrne wondered why his dog was suddenly acting strange and took out his smartphone to capture the moment in a video.
Initially, Byrne thought Shelby was overly sensitive due to the sound of the garbage truck’s break. He had started recording when he noticed that Shelby’s chain had enough leeway that could allow him to reach the street to where the garbageman was headed.
Shelby waited patiently for the garbageman to get out of the truck and pick up the trash. Immediately, he ran toward the man at full speed.
Thankfully, Shelby didn’t plan on attacking the man. Instead, he simply wanted to greet him.
The garbageman returned the favor by petting and hugging him.
