How many times have we seen dog parents calling their dogs only to resort to running after them in an attempt to take them home? These dog parents are just as confused as you are when you’re watching them trying to catch their dogs.
Not only is it sort of embarrassing when your dog doesn’t respond to their names, but it is also dangerous for them. So why do some dogs remember their names and others forget them? Is there anything we can do about this?
Yes, but here’s everything you need to keep in mind to help your dog answer when you call out to him:
- Train your dogs to answer to their names. Remember you should aim for consistency and progress instead of speed. So even if your dog does answer a couple of times, keep training them.
- Always use the same command when you want them to answer to their names.
- Remember to use positive reinforcement – punishing them or scolding them will only make them fearful and stressed out.
- Check to see if your dog is hearing-impaired – this could be another reason why they won’t respond.
Take your dog to the vet to see if there’s an underlying health issue that’s causing them to ignore you when you call out to them. Remember that a dog who isn’t responding to their name isn’t being disobedient – dogs love to please. After speaking to your vet, find out how you can continue to train your dogs in a positive manner!
