12 Ways To Avoid Having To Deal With Dog Fights

12 Ways To Avoid Having To Deal With Dog Fights

No one wants to deal with dog fights. Here’s how to avoid them.

1. Use A Deterrent Spray

For stray dogs, you can keep them away with sprays like these.

2. Take Breaks

Don’t let your dog get overstimulated, whether negatively or positively, so that they stay calm.

3. Use A Short Leash

Short leashes give you more control over your dog’s movements.

4. Train

Teach your dog to focus on you and obey commands that will keep them out of trouble.

5. Understand Canine Body Language

Learn to discern the telltale signs of aggression, intimidation, or fear in both your dog and other dogs.

6. Don’t Be Distracted

Don’t be on your phone or have your attention scattered elsewhere. Make sure you’re always aware of what your dog is doing.

7. Ask First

Before letting your dog play with someone else’s dog, ask their owner first if it’s okay – and listen to their answer!

8. Know Your Dog Well

Know your dog’s temperament, situations they’re uncomfortable with, and how they react to certain things.

9. Separate Dogs Who Dislike Each Other

If you have two dogs who are aggressive towards each other, work with a trainer – and, until then, keep them apart.

10. Don’t Offer Food To Multiple Dogs

There’s nothing quite like fighting over resources to get usually patient dogs aggressive. Don’t hand out treats at the dog park or other setting with lots of dogs.

11. Walk When It’s Less Busy

Try and walk your dog when fewer dogs are out and about.

12. Watch Toys

Some dogs may have resource-guarding tendencies. If you can’t trust your dog or other dogs, don’t play with prized toys around other canines.
