Potty training a puppy can be difficult and take a lot of time. Here are 20 tips to make the process easier.
- Bring your dog outside to use the bathroom as soon as they wake up from naps or sleep.
- Reward your dog for using the bathroom outside.
- Remember that a dog can only hold their bladder for as many hours as their months of age, plus one. (A 3-month-old puppy can hold it for 4 hours.)
- Try potty doorbells that your dog can ring to ask to be let out.
- Consider never training with puppy pads.
- Stick to your schedule and stay in control of it, no matter how much your dog begs otherwise!
- Keep baby wipes nearby to wipe up messes or dirty paws.
- If your puppy has diarrhea, bring them to the vet ASAP.
- Don’t bring your dog out to use the bathroom off-leash.
- Take them outside every hour or two.
- Taking them to use the bathroom after they eat and drink.
- Don’t punish a dog for messing up; positive reinforcement only!
- Use a dog crate to reduce the chances of accidents.
- Don’t get distracted while in the beginning of potty training.
- Keep an eye on how much water they drink.
- Designate a certain location for them to use the bathroom in.
- Avoid dirty locations.
- Use vinegar and baking soda to get rid of accident odors.
- Use potty bells so you know when your dog is sneaking out.
- Take your dog out to use the bathroom after playtime.
