3 Lifesaving Commands Your Dogs Should Know

Dog parents spend a lot of time training their dogs to fix unacceptable behavior or to polish their manners, but there are a few commands that can save your dog’s life.

1. Down Stay

Your dog should be able to immediately drop his body to the ground when commanded. This command will help save your dog’s life when you know calling out to him and him running to you will risk his life. Assume you’re on the other side of a busy street and your dog’s on the other. Asking him to “down stay” will help him understand that you want him to drop his body to the ground and wait for you to get to him.

2. Drop It

Toxic household items, dangerous plants, poisonous fruits, medicines, inedible things – these are all known to us, but to our dogs they mean little. So when you see your dog with something dangerous in his mouth, the command “drop it” can save his life and stop him from swallowing whatever it is that he has in his mouth.

3. Come

Because dogs are almost always excited, they’re oblivious to potential threats around them. For example, during snake season if you spot a snake and your dog doesn’t, the command “come” can save their life.
