Around a dog’s rectum and anus are several anal glands that are somewhat similar to those that a skunk uses to spray stink everywhere. Naturally, this means that these glands can produce quite a stench! They’re used for marking and identification, but due to their close proximity to the anus, they may suffer infection, rupture, or abscess at some point.

3. If it gets sick, it can be a sign of more serious issues.

Itching, pain, or discomfort around your pup’s butt can often be a sign of infection, allergies, or more. So make it a habit to check and examine this area when bathing your dog, and if you notice that your pup is acting strange regarding his perennial area, see a veterinarian as soon as you can!
