3 Ways To Prevent Your Dogs From Eating Their Food Too Fast

Dogs can get very excited for food, causing them to wolf down their meals much too quickly. Unfortunately, this can lead to digestive problems, or worse still, bloat – a medical emergency where your dog’s stomach twists, potentially leading to death.

But how can you convince your dog to slow down when chowing down? Trying to train them to eat more carefully isn’t exactly as easy as training them to sit or stay. Here are three ways you can do so.

Use A Toy

Toys that dispense food when pushed around or solved are good for mental stimulation. For dogs that eat too quickly, putting their meals into these types of toys is a great way to forcefully slow down their gobbling! Make sure you choose a toy that’s tough enough, easy to wash, and not impossible to solve.

Use A Slow-Feeding Bowl

Dogs eating too quickly is a very common problem, which is likely why there are slow feeder bowls commercially available. They have high ridges that serve as an obstacle, making the process of eating slower. Make sure you get one that’s complex enough to really slow your dog down.

You can also DIY a “bowl” of this kind – just use a muffin or ice tray and put food in each compartment. Slow them down further by putting tennis balls or other partially heavy toys on top!

Use Training

Instead of giving your dog meals in bowls, feed their meal requirements during training. You can do this for standard commands and cues or use this to teach fancy tricks. This will slow the eating process down while keeping them physically and mentally active.
