Catching a dog that has gone loose is a difficult task, and goes against our instinctive urge to chase after anything that goes astray. To avoid aggressive behavior and prevent traffic accidents, here are three strategies to safely retrieve a loose dog:
Stop, Drop, Freeze
Take control of the exciting “catch me if you can” game by doing the exact opposite, which is basically not moving at all. Your dog will likely be curious enough to investigate if you stop the chase, drop in a sitting or lying position, and freeze until he approaches close enough to catch.
Calming Signals
For excitable or fearful dogs, approaching with direct eye contact and purposeful movements can feel overwhelming and threatening to them. Use canine language and peripheral vision to help calm the situation and encourage your dog to approach you.
Appetite Appeal
The simple act of holding a treat in your hand can be tempting enough to gain the attention of a loose dog and entice him to take the food bait. For a less trusting canine, tossing several treats gradually from a short distance away to where you are allows him to approach on his own terms. Ensure that your movements are slow, and be patient.
