In our last article, we covered four toxic plants that our dogs should avoid at all cost. Now it’s time to add four more plants to the list so you’re aware of them. If you see them growing in your backyard, please remove them, they’re not worth it no matter how beautiful they look.
Here are four more super poisonous plants that our dogs should avoid:
1. Japanese Yew
Commonly used as landscaping plants because they stay green all year-round, there’s a high chance that dogs would want to take a bite of this toxic plant thinking that it’s just ordinary grass. Dr. Laura Stern, DVM, DABVT says, “They can cause vomiting, lethargy, a wobbly gait, and most seriously, heart and blood pressure changes, which can be life-threatening.” Within hours of ingesting this plant, death can occur.
2. Castor Bean
Castor bean contains ricin, a highly toxic element. Ricin, when ingested, can cause multiple organ failures and a high amount of them are found in the seeds. Dogs who swallow the seed full may not get sick, but those who crack it open can get very sick. The mortality rate is 9%.
3. Autumn Crocus
Commonly used in brewing beer, this is an extremely toxic plant that dogs should avoid. Within hours of ingesting this plant, you will note an increase in your dog’s body temperature, as high as 108 degrees Fahrenheit, high enough to kill your dogs.
If you suspect that your dog may have ingested one of these plants, please visit the vet immediately.
