Who wouldn’t want to get an adorable bundle of fur and paws as a gift? But while it’s tempting to give someone in your life a dog as a Christmas gift, you probably shouldn’t. Here are 5 reasons why.
This Is A Serious Commitment
Caring for a dog is a huge responsibility. When you give someone a dog, you are expecting them to be committed to it for the next decade or two. Finances, time, and effort are all necessary for years and years.
Dubious Sources
Most of the puppies that you can get around the festive season came from puppy mills, meaning they may not be healthy, or that you may be supporting unfavorable organizations.
Desire
A dog is a terrible surprise gift because you can’t simply return them if you simply don’t want one. Are you really sure these people want a dog? What about other people in their household? Just because someone likes dogs doesn’t mean they want to own one.
Stressful Circumstances
New dogs need time to slowly adapt to their new homes. Christmas is the worst time for this – there’s lots of excitement, plenty of people going in and out, and too much auditory and visual stimulation.
Expense
Dogs are expensive to care for. There are medical costs, grooming prices, supplies to buy, and more. If someone isn’t ready to have a dog, they may struggle to give the dog the care they need.
