If you’ve only just made the choice to get a dog for your family, that’s great! What we would encourage you to do is consider adopting a dog from a shelter!
There’s a lot of myths about shelter dogs – that they aren’t loveable, you can’t train them, they always come with sicknesses, etc. Those are not true! Shelter dogs are just as loving and amazing as any other pooch. Here’s five reasons why you should consider going to the shelter rather than your local breeder.
- First of all, shelter dogs have so much love to give that they can help us heal from traumatic experiences. When both of you might be feeling rough, you will help each other heal.
- All pooches deserve love. Yes, some puppies from shelters may be ill, difficult to train, or anxious because of past abuse. But they still deserve a second chance and a loving family to give them what they need!
- There’s a pronounced difference in the personality of a shelter pup when adopted. A lot of pooches turn into completely different dogs when at home – they just need a chance.
- Even if a pup is ill or anxious, it doesn’t really matter. You might be worried but the moment you see them and the moment they come for a cuddle, all your worries will be gone.
- And finally, there’s a lot that we ourselves can also learn from shelter dogs – especially how to love unconditionally after heartbreak.
