Taking care of your pup’s unique and specific medical needs is important to ensuring a long and healthy life. Depending on the breed of your pup, there are different factors to look out for and give extra care to.
If you’re considering getting a beagle pup, then you need to be aware of the health conditions that they are predisposed to. Here are six common health conditions to look out for in beagle pups.
1. Ear conditions
Due to their floppy ears, beagle pups are susceptible to ear infections as well as hematoma. Their narrow ear canals don’t help matters, either. Learn what causes ear infections here and how to prevent them here!
2. Hip dysplasia
17% of beagle experience hip dysplasia, which is surprising considering the fact that they are a smaller breed. This condition can cause pain and eventually may lead to loss of motion. Learn more about this condition here and find out how to prevent and/or manage it here.
3. Eye conditions
All beagle pups can commonly contract just about any and every eye-related disease that there is. Find out about those conditions here.
4. Demodectic mange
This condition is brought on by a certain strain of mites and is especially common in beagle puppies. Treatment is necessary in order to help cure the condition.
5. Skin conditions
Beagle pups may experience a number of these, including allergies, bacterial skin infections, seborrhea, and both non-tumorous and tumorous skin growths. Regularly check your pup’s skin to ensure that there are no signs of irritation on the skin.
6. Intervertebral disk disease
Pups of this breed who have short legs and longer backs are predisposed to this mainly genetic condition. Some symptoms from this disease can be confused with aseptic meningitis and Wobbler’s syndrome, which are also common in beagles.
