If there’s one place, apart from home, where your dogs absolutely enjoy themselves it’s the dog park. It’s like an amusement park for dogs – they can’t wait to go to the dog park and won’t want to leave it!
When we take our dogs to the dog park, we want them to have fun and we want to have fun too, but there are certain things, rules if I may, to keep in mind to make sure that you and your dogs have the best time of your lives every time you’re at the dog park!
1. Let your dogs bark!
Let your dogs be dogs at the dog park by allowing them to bark to their heart’s content. While you should allow your dogs to bark as much as they want, don’t allow them to snarl or growl at another dog at the park. Keep an eye for aggression or fear, and if you think your dog is either aggressive or fearful they should be separated from their playmates so there are no accidents. Also, never touch another person’s dog, pull your dog out instead.
2. Let your dogs rough house with other dogs – so long as they’re enjoying it
If you’ve been a dog parent for too long, you know that dogs love to rough-house – they’ve probably roughhoused with you too! At the dog park, it’s common for dogs to roughhouse and as long as the other dogs are enjoying themselves you can take a break, but supervise. While it’s okay to let dogs roughhouse if they’re enjoying themselves, don’t allow your dog to corner, bite, or scratch other dogs.
3. Don’t allow a smaller dog to play with big dogs
If your tiny dog is fearful around large dogs, it’s best to not allow them to play together at the dog park. If you’re at the dog park, choose an open space that is away from the pack of big dogs or allow your dog to play with other dogs their size. Having said that, sometimes, size doesn’t matter, so if your tiny dog enjoys playing with large dogs, supervise their play!
How many of you follow these rules? Let us know in the comments! Watch out for Part 2!
