While it’s true that all dogs are perfect, humans just aren’t, and there’s only one thing you can do about it – ask yourself a few questions before you bring home your dog. You want to be sure that your perfect dog has a perfect human looking after them.
It’s not as simple as going to a shelter, picking up a dog and bringing them home. There’s a lot of thinking to do, remember, you are responsible for that dog’s wellbeing, healthy and happiness. Here are some questions you need to ask yourself before you bring home your dog! Oh, and here’s Part 1, in case you missed it!
1. What kind of a clean freak are you?
Before bringing home a dog, you need to understand that your house will never be spotless, ever again. Okay, maybe it’ll be spotless for a few minutes, but a minute later it would look like you haven’t cleaned in a while. You need to understand that dogs shed their coat. They pee, drool, poop, barf, and sometimes, when it’s muddy outside, they’ll likely bring the mud inside with their paws. So if keeping the house clean is your concern, bring home a dog who’s already been housebroken and sheds less.
2. How much money can you spend on your dog every month?
When you bring home a dog, you need to remember that you’ll be spending money to keep them happy, healthy and occupied. This means toys, medical costs, bedding, chews, treats, new leashes, ramps, kennels… the list just goes on. You also need to keep in mind that your dog would need regular vet checks, vaccinations, medicines in case they fall sick, and grooming!
3. Why do you want to bring home a dog? What do you expect from them?
You need to decide whether you want a companion, an assistant or a security guard. Although all dogs fit the criteria, some are better at being companions than scaring away burglars, like my dog, for instance.
