6 Signs A Dog Is About To Bite

It’s important to understand a dog’s body language so you know when your actions are making them annoyed. Most of the times when dogs bite, people often say how they had no idea he was going to bite. Well, clearly the dog was communicating, you just didn’t read them well.

Every dog displays signs of distress before biting people. If you’re going to be surrounded by dogs, you need to learn their body language so you don’t annoy them too much to the point where they have to bite you to stop you. Here are some signs your dog displays before he bites:

1. Licking Lips and/or Avoiding Eye Contact

Not all dogs will display this behavior before biting, but avoiding eye contact or licking lips os one of the first signs your dog displays when they’re uncomfortable. A well-trained dog may not bite, but they will get anxious and/or stressed, which is also not good for you and them. If your dog is unable to get himself out of an uncomfortable situation, they might bite.

2. Growling or Showing Teeth

A lot of people think that when their dog shows teeth that they’re smiling… not necessarily. They could be annoyed and stressed and want to get out of an uncomfortable situation. Having said that, a low growl followed by a showing of teeth is definitely a warning that the dog may bite. Dogs bite when they feel threatened so if you see your dog growling or snapping teeth, quickly find out what’s making them uncomfortable and rectify the situation before things escalate.

3. Wagging Tail

I agree that sometimes their tail can throw you off the warning signs because most dogs wag their tails out of happiness. When dogs are too excited, apart from their tail, their entire lower body moves to show excitement, but when they’re about to bite, their tail moves slowly, but their lower body is perfectly still. Keep an eye on the tail and if you see that your dog is uncomfortable, rectify the situation.
