6 Ways To Reduce A Dog's Stress When Going Through A Break-Up (Part 2)

If you are going through stress, your dog goes through it too. During a break-up, we tend to explode with negative energy and feelings because of all the arguments and disagreements, and this negativity filters down to our dogs.

Here’s Part 1, in case you missed it. Here are some ways to reduce your dog’s stress when going through a break-up.

1. Maintain consistency

Sit down with your ex and discuss scheduling, diet, grooming, and rules that will be set in place. Consistency should be maintained in both homes, for example, your dog should eat the same brand of food in both homes, visit the same groomer, follow the same schedule… etc.

2. Protect your dog during custody

Remember to keep your dog’s best interest in mind. When thinking about where your dog will live, think about your dog. Your dog needs someone who’s home most of the time, and he should be housed where he’ll receive the most attention. It doesn’t matter if that’s your house, or your ex’s. Your dog’s wellbeing matters more.

3. Hope for the best, but expect the worst

When you enter a new relationship, put an agreement in place that will include your dog i.e. ownership, custody, and visitation. In the event of a breakup, you have your plan ready to execute.
