Growing old with or before your dog? Teach them to help you with certain tasks with these 7 cool commands!
Come
Yes, most dogs know the “come” command – but how many can do so reliably? As you age, it’ll be more difficult for you to chase after your dog, so make sure they can come when called.
Find It
This command involves teaching your dog how to find certain common objects that you may misplace, such as your wallet, phone, or keys.
Push It
Teach your dog to operate light switches, medical alert buttons, or push buttons on command so they can help you with this simple everyday task.
Open Doors
Teach your dog to open room doors, cabinets, or drawers to help you when you can’t get to them. Just make sure none of the accessible cabinets have anything they may want to eat!
Fetch
Beyond just fetching toys, dogs can be taught to fetch certain items that you dropped or are far away, like your keys, the remote, a newspaper, or your phone.
Stay
But not just any “stay” – a long one! You’ll want to be able to trust your dog to stay put for as long as you need as you slow down in your golden years.
Pull
As you get older, taking off your sock or shoe may get difficult. Teach your dog the “pull” command so they can help you without making it a game.
