73 Dogs Living In Horrific Conditions Rescued From North Texas Puppy Mill

We’ve forever exposed puppy mills and how they neglect the animals they have, but it looks like they don’t learn their lessons. Fortunately, 73 dogs were rescued from a puppy mill in North Texas, who were said to be living in horrific conditions.

According to the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT), a puppy mill in Stephens County was host to 73 neglected dogs who were found living in their own filth and in cramped conditions. Apart from German shepherds, the owners of that puppy mill were also breeding Australian shepherds, border collies and Labrador retrievers.

Kim Meek, lead humane investigator for HSNT said, “The conditions these dogs were living in were absolutely horrific. It was clear that the owners had become overwhelmed. There were so many dogs living inside the house that the owners had actually moved into a travel trailer in the yard. More dogs were living in the attached garage and two large buildings. Even worse, there were several dogs crammed into wire pop up crates. In many of the enclosures, more than 6 inches of feces covered the floors.”

The Stephens County Animal Shelter agreed to shelter 13 dogs, while 60 were handed over to the HSNT. The rescued dogs received medical examinations and were treated for infections. Of the 60 dogs, two puppies tested positive for parvovirus, of which one unfortunately passed away, and the other is being treated by a vet.

HSNT veterinarian Dr. Cynthia Jones said, “Puppies born in puppy mills frequently contract life-threatening diseases such as parvovirus and distemper as a result of the squalor they live in. Sadly, many do not live to see their first birthday.”
