8 Breeds Who Must Earn Your Trust Before They're Unleashed

Being a dog parent myself, I know that the best gift I can give my dog every day is to let them be themselves. Dogs love to run off leash, they love to explore wherever their noses would take them, they love to be free, and we understand and respect that. But there’s a but.

Some dogs, especially those, who’re bred to hunt often get sidetracked when playing around and when you call them back, they’ll be stubborn enough to not come. This can be dangerous for your dog and for strangers who come across your dog. As dog parents, we love to let them free, but as responsible dog parents, we need to earn their trust first. Here are some breeds who must earn your trust before they’re unleashed.

1. Beagle

Although these dogs are loyal, funny, and happy beings, their strong sense of smell can sometimes get them in trouble. If they’re off-leash and their nose catches a scent that they can’t ignore, they’ll happily and vigorously track the scent, and it’s nearly impossible to steer them away from pursuing the scent. When beagles get bored, they dig, howl and… escape! So retractable leashes and fenced yards should be your top priority.

2. Alaskan Malamute

If you’re looking for strong, independent, and talented dogs, these are your best bet. Having said that, these dogs love to dig. They can dig a hole outside your house and inside your house. They dig to feed their urge to explore so yeah, they can escape through the hole they just dug.

3. Husky

Oh, these dogs are professional escape artists! People who want to adopt huskies should have fenced enclosures that they can’t escape from. Also, huskies have a high prey drive so if they spot a squirrel or a car and they want to chase it, they will if they are given the opportunity. These dogs should be unleashed only if they’re closely supervised.

4. Weimaraner

These dogs were bred to hunt deers and bears, so you can imagine their high prey drive. If they’re not trained or provided highly stimulated exercises, they will chase anything that moves and bring whatever they’ve chased back to you, like the good boys and good girls they are. These dogs need high mental and physically stimulating activities to keep them engaged… and exhausted!
