Dogs don’t like vets, and we all know that, but just because they don’t like them, doesn’t mean we should stop taking them, right? Let’s understand that it’s common for dogs to experience fear and anxiety, but there are ways to help them.
It’s possible to make the vet visit as smooth as possible for your dogs to eventually begin enjoying them! Wait, what? Yep! You heard that right! While I haven’t tried all these techniques on my dog, but I can tell you that some of them worked wonders! Check out these simple ways to make your dog enjoy his vet visits!
1. Book an Appointment
Call ahead and try to ensure that you’re in and out with your dog in the shortest time possible. It’s best to book an appointment for your dog than walking in and waiting in line for your turn. The more you wait, the anxious your dog becomes.
2. Practice at home
When you have an exam coming up, don’t you practice mock tests? The same goes for your dog. When you have the time, and a few days before the actual appointment, practice a common vet exam with your dog so they know what to expect.
3. Teach your dog basic commands
This is extremely important especially if you don’t want you or your dog to freak out in the middle of a vet exam. “Sit”, “Stay”, and “Down” makes it all better for dogs as they familiarize those with home and treats, perhaps!
4. When you have the time, pop in to say Hi!
It’s always a good idea to let your dog familiarize himself with the vet and people who work there so that during a vet exam, your dog doesn’t feel like he’s surrounded by strangers. When you have the time, take your dog to the vet office and let him hi-five with people there so that future exams are less stressful
How many of you have tried these? Let us know in the comments! Watch out for Part 2!
