80 Dogs Rescued From Unsanitary Shelter In Georgia

Eighty dogs and puppies were rescued recently from an “unsanitary” shelter in Hancock County, Georgia. The woman who runs the shelter had been rescuing stray dogs but got “overwhelmed” over the years as their numbers grew, leading them to suffer.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) said in a press release that the dogs were “found in unsanitary conditions throughout the property and in the home, and some suffered from medical issues that will require immediate veterinary treatment, including mange, overgrown nails, and parasites, as well as one dog with a broken limb and one with conjunctivitis.”

The rescue mission was facilitated by the Hancock Animal Friends – a group working to reduce the stray population in Hancock County. They reached out to the ASPCA for help when they learned about the 80 dogs. The Atlanta Humane Society also assisted in the mission and would help rehabilitate and re-home several dogs.

According to a post by the Hancock Animal Friends on Facebook, the woman who ran the shelter tried to get help but was let down by “the county and law enforcement.” They hope this unfortunate incident will draw more attention to the stray problem in the county and bring change.

The dogs are receiving veterinary care and will eventually be put up for adoption as soon as they have been fully rehabilitated.
