85-Year-Old Farmer Reunited With His Stolen Dog

There was much joy to go around in Meath, Dublin recently, as an 85-year-old farmer was reunited with his stolen pup; Brandy.

The last month was truly a trying time for farmer and pensioner Sean, whose beloved Springer Spaniel was snatched from his home in Meath. 12-year-old Brandy was more than just a dog to his parent, he embodied the reason for the farmer to get up every morning, which was expressed in his tireless search for Brandy that concluded in much contentment.

Approximately two million pets are stolen each year. Pet theft is more common than people are made to believe and it isn’t just prevalent in “dire” areas. Around 93 percent of lost dogs are recovered; whilst being a positive statistic, still displays the presence of dognapping.

Dognapping isn’t something any dog parent would want to think about, but situations like that of Brandy’s happen; therefore, it is crucial to be aware and prepared. First off; never leave your dog unattended. Whether you’re out shopping at the store or quickly popping out of the car, don’t take your eyes off your pup and never leave them in an unattended car.

Secondly, insert a microchip, take a photograph of your pup and register them. Taking photos of your dog, more so their unique blemishes or features you’d normally identify them with. Microchipping your dog is now a legal mandate to be followed by pup parents, even though it won’t prevent theft it could help you be reunited.

You can also search online for Lost & Found pet websites on which you can register your dog’s details for an added peace of mind. Lastly, keep up to date records on any changes to you dog; inform your vet or pet insurance provider because the details can come in handy.

By and by, with the help and support of a vigilant neighbourhood, Brandy was safely found in Ballyfermont and reunited happily with her parent.

While we’re more than relieved that the dog was reunited with her parent, we can’t help but wonder what makes a person want to steal dogs from their loving homes. What gives?
