According To Experts, Dogs Can Visualize Things Through Their Noses!

What can your dog smell? Experts at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History conducted research that shows that dogs don’t just have powerful noses – they also use their noses as visualization tools!

The study that led to this conclusion was published in the Journal of Comparative Psychology. It was conducted on 48 dogs, 23 of which were non-working family dogs and 25 of which were dogs trained for search and rescue operations.

Each dog was first tested with two toys, both their favorites. Each dog was led to a scent trail for these items twice. One time would be done with one toy, the dogs would follow the trail and find the correct toy waiting for them. The other time would be done with a different toy, and the dogs would follow the trail and find a toy with a different scent waiting.

The results showed that dogs acted predictably when led to the expected toy. However, when a toy with a different scent was at the end of their trail, they showed signs of hesitation. All attempts for all dogs, regardless of training, returned these results! After five attempts, the dogs learned to expect treats and were less hesitant for either toy.
