Tim Rundle-Wood is an entrepreneur from London who has recently moved into a new apartment. He was excited to be in a new space, so he decided to start a reed diffuser to create a relaxing ambiance.
Tim’s dog, Henry, was obsessed with the synthetic smell, so he got closer to the diffuser. He took a deep breath, inhaling the scent, and that’s when Tim figured something was wrong.
Henry almost died from toxic shock because of all the chemicals in the reed diffuser. Dr. Allison Fields, a veterinarian at VCA Murphy Road Animal Hospital, warns people of the danger of synthetic scents. While most people don’t think anything wrong could happen unless their dog eats the diffuser, having those chemicals in the air can be just as dangerous. Inhaling chemicals can cause drooling, vomiting, lethargy, and ataxia. In severe cases, it can lead to liver failure.
When Henry inhaled those chemicals, he became glassy-eyed and unresponsive. Tim immediately took him to the vet. When he knew Henry would be alright, he started brainstorming ideas for a way to develop pet-friendly fragrances. He started making them at home, but eventually expanded, and opened a business called Twoodle Co. He now sells natural home scents that every pet parent can buy and safely use in their homes.
Dogs are sensitive to essential oils, but cats and birds are especially endangered by them. They lack an enzyme in their liver, so they cannot process the ingredients that essential oils are made of. If you want your house to smell nice, consult a vet and make sure the ingredients in the fragrances are not toxic to your furry friends.
