Over a month ago, Nick Haworth thought he lost his best friend when she went overboard on his boat – in the Pacific Ocean. The best friend? A German shepherd named Luna. After searching to no avail, Nick assumed the worst and mourned the loss of his pup.
But Nick received the best news of his life this week when someone spotted Luna on a road on San Clemente Island. The island is 70 miles off of the San Diego coast and is home to a Navy-owned training base.
The intrepid pup used her survival skills to swim to the island, which was roughly two miles from where she went overboard. As if that long swim wasn’t daunting enough, the odds of her surviving on the island were slim as there is generally no standing water, but thanks to El Nino, puddles formed. People believe she survived by eating dead seagulls, fish, and rats.
FoxNews says Nick Hayworth stayed at sea for two days to look for Luna, but could never find her. Navy staff assisted, but were also unsuccessful.
That’s why Navy officials were shocked to see Luna sitting near the road Tuesday morning. They opened their door and she hopped right in, ready for her long journey to be over.
